Mastel + Mastel Gallery was founded in April 2001 at 70 Washington Street, #700 by Elissa Jane and Randall Mastel. The husband and wife team had hosted and curated several exhibitions before opening their newly established gallery, including The Back Shed at Galapagos, Williamburg, Brooklyn, February 2000 and Bio*Tech, during DUMBO Art Under the Bridge Festival, October 2000. Since the opening of the Mastel + Mastel Gallery, artists on the verge have had a venue for their work.
In September 2001, Mastel + Mastel Gallery was responsible for producing and hosting Digital DUMBO (www.digitaldumbo.com), a three day festival showcasing digital arts and the creative organizations who make them happen in DUMBO and beyond. The event was a tremendous success, attracting thousands of people to the DUMBO area. The Mastels procured two additional spaces for the event, allowing for many more participants to show off their wares. Priding themselves on showcasing artists on the verge, Mastel + Mastel Gallery shows contemporary painting, sculpture, mixed media and digitally produced works. Artists affiliated with the gallery include Michael Krynski, Marsha Trattner, Alison Ward, Joe Heaps Nelson, John Carmichael, Randall Mastel, Richard Lamb, Ursula Clark, Julian Jackson, Rene Lynch and Tanya Rynd. Mastel + Mastel Gallery is soon becoming the most prominent commercial gallery in the evolving DUMBO neighborhood. The gallery is hosting a Professional Artist Workshop, which is kicking off in October 2001. Karen Yedvab, founder of Left Brain | Right Brain, who is an esteemed business coach for artists will design and lead the series. This ongoing workshop series will enable artists to take their professional approach to their work to the next level. In the future, patrons can look forward to Music as an Art Form, Digital DUMBO II and film screenings from independent producers. |
