Herb Sellin was born in Grande Prairie, Alberta and grew up on a farm near Spirit River. He has been painting full-time for more than 30 years. His Landscapes and Portraits grace the walls of hundreds of offices and homes throughout North America and Europe. Internationally he is best known for his life-size portrait of the former Prime Minister of Canada, the late Rt. Hon. John G. Diefenbaker.
Herb studied Advertising at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary, and later studied Painting privately under the late retired former Head, Dr. Stanford Perrott. Specializing in Creative Ideas in his final year of Art School, Herb immediately became Art Director in Advertising for Eaton's Stores of Alberta for 2 years, where he won numerous International Awards in Advertising. Searching for an Art Form more lasting than Advertising, Herb began painting full-time. He was greatly influenced by Tom Thompson, the "French Impressionists" and "The Fauves". His work is therefore marked by his sense of brilliant Color, Design and Composition, coupled with his often dramatic use of light and shade. Herb is as well-versed in the Fine Arts of Painting Realism and Abstraction as he is in designing Corporate Logos and Advertising Campaigns. Herb owned and operated “The Herb Sellin Gallery” from 1979 to 1989, which handled his work exclusively. Herb enjoys physics and inventing. Presently he lives in Calgary. |
