Elizabeth Stern's work draws on an unusual range of influences: early memories poring over her father's medical textbooks, recent advances in neuronal imaging, and long hours hiking and gardening. Across painting and printmaking, she adds collage and stitching to build organic shapes and lines that blur the anatomical with the botanical, the cellular with the landscape-scale.

"I often see a greater landscape in the most microscopic elements," she has said. "Ultimately there are connections everywhere." That sensibility runs through “The Boating Party.” These paintings begin in Baja, watching waves hit rock, whales moving up the coast, light shifting on water and sand. But by the time Stern is in the studio, she's let the seeing go, working instead from memory and feeling. Fragments of her own prints get buried under layers of oil and cold wax, some visible, some not. These aren't landscapes so much as what it feels like to stand at the edge of the water, long after you've left it.
